Battle of Arsuf, Third Crusade, Templars and Hospitallers

I came across these old pics of some of my Third Crusade army that was based around the Battle of Arsuf and couldn't resist the temptation to post up the pics!

They were all speed painted using washed and quick highlights so I would not describe them as being painted up to my usual standard but I have fond memories of painting them up so I thought I'd pop a few pics of the Templars and Hospitalers up. here.

The horses were painted using the method described HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.

The Cappa on the Hospitallers was just painted in black and then successive subtle layers of dry brushing were applied. This was then given (from what I remember!) at least two coats of Citadel Black Wash.

For the Templar's Cappa I just used the Boneyard Foundry Triad. As I say the miniatures were painted up very quickly and on close inspection it shows! However, for a Wargames Standard, just to get the toys out on the table they were well worth the quick job.

And who knows.... now that I've rediscovered these pics and I'm equipped with Warwick Kinraid's great rule set, Soldiers of God, I find my interest in the Third Crusade rekindled and it may just lead me down the path of re-starting the project! Hope so!! :>)

Blasts From The Past VI

On Sunday I got back from a great weekend at HWHQ and the WHW campaign weekend. It was Age of Arthur all the way for me. special thanks to Jim Sweeney for lending me an army [as mine wasn't finished- yep I know, the shame ;o)] , also to James morris and Steve Jones for running a seemless campaign that was packed with laughs and last but not least all my oponents (Dave, Jack, Ivre, James, and all the skirmishers!) who playey within the true spirit of the game and provided a lot of entertainment.

A Blast From The Past V

Sunday gone, I returned from the thrilling experience of what had been a fabulous weekend at Games Workshop HQ in Lenton and the Age of Arthur, Warhammer Ancient Battles Campaign run by the author the the supplement, James Morris.

Many thanks to (Big) Jim Sweeney for the loan of the Irish army, which was soundly trounced in every game I played LOL. The defeats were to take nothing away from the fun, the laughs and the endless entertainment of using an army I had not used before and my failings in learning how to use the army over the two days! 

Thanks also to my opponents Ivre, Dave, Jack and James as well as all who took part in the highly entertaining skirmish level games.

Blast from the Past IV: Did He or Didn't He?

Continuing with the series of Blast From the Past posts.....

This was a display put on by Gripping Beast at Warhammer World during the Age of Arthur Campaign Weekend. A wonderfully rich collection with many miniatures dating back to the origins of Gripping Beast all the way through to Soapy's "Arthurian" Welsh range which was new at the time.

Painting Hoss Flesh Part Four

Hey, here I am again. I've been ordered by Bill and others to update this Blog thing of mine so not wanting to disappoint my audience (if indeed there is one) I will let you know what's been going on thus far. So, fully finished except for a bit of static grass i have two units of Huns and the Bucellari done. So that's roughly half the army which isn't bad considering I have less than four days in which to get this show finished. Am I panicking? Yep, but I will get this project finished or die trying! Don't hold me on the death thing though, could be most unpleasant ;o)

I'd like to take a moment to say that the 'Darren Harding Hoss Painting Method' (TM) has worked a treat. I really did not expect this so mucho kudos to Mr Harding for introducing me to this very time saving mode of painting. It's not a method I'd use in every army I intend to paint but it is certainly the way to go if you're in a hurry or just want to put an army on the table, sans infantry, in a decent amount of time.

Painting Blind; a new theory in the speedy production of colourfull toy soldiers. OK, for anyone that tells you that leaving out the eyes on a mini is a good idea, well, don't listen. I made a decision early on in the project to avoid minor details and stick to the major stuff you see from about two or three feet away from the table. Bad idea. It has actually taken me longer to leave out the eyes than it would have to paint them in. Don't ask!! I can't explain. Must must have had a knock in the womb or something......

Anyway, more handy hints etc when I've got a bit more time. For now enjoy the latest of the pics. Oh, and you are also invited to feel a little on the sorry side for me what with all the painting I have to left to do.
