Battle of Hastings Pics III

Yet more pics of my Norman WAB army that will be getting re-based for for the demo game of the Battle of Hastings next year. This time it's the turn of the Crossbowmen. These will be interspersed on on more loose bases than the normal infantry, more in the spirit of how I would base English Archers for the HYW.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to the sizes of the bases? I was thinking of basing the melee infantry on bases either 50x50mm or 60x60mm and building up the units from there. should I use different sizes of bases for the looser Archers (bad pun) or just limit the number on a base? Lots to contemplate:

  1. Why not go for an Impetus-style base, Darren? 12cm wide, 6 cm deep. Just vary the number of minis (approximately 4 lights, a dozen heavy foot, five cavalry). They could be used for Impetus, or my rules.

The main advantage of the bigger bases are that they are easy to pack and unpack, and can look very scenic.

  2. Nice crossbowmen, Darren. Simon makes some good points on the multi-basing - particularly the transporting and storage parts.

  3. Thanks Dean. I should also have said- it's really easy to use magnetic sheet under the big bases which can then be safely transported in Really Useful Boxes, or similar.

  4. Thanks guys, funnily enough most of my larger armies are based on vignette style bases. If I go for Impetus style I was thinking of doing 60x60mm then they can be used for Impetus, Only the Strong, Hail Caesar etc. I'll have to give it some serious thought..... which I'm doing :>)

Probably mock up a base first before I make the big decision.....

  5. 60 x 60 could be a good compromise. I base most of my stuff on 60 x 60, although I find the larger bases very tempting - 180 x 60 can be really striking!

  6. Bigger bases are also best for demo's too. Moving all those smaller bases could be off putting for new gamers. It's too much like work for some.

  7. Yeah, 60x60mm should allow enough room for a few vignettes/conversions that should bring the table alive.

I'll do some experimantation and post up the results.

    Thanks chaps.

  8. I don't really have an opinion on the bases, but I do think that one crossbowman is very fine, and if the brushwork is the same for the rest of your hosts, I can't wait to see the group shots. Generally I find bigger bases are more visually effective and the minis suffer less in gaming, transport and storage. "Looser archers" - would they be the ones cavorting with camp followers and getting drunk before battle? :)

    1. Looser woman may have to be added to the bases Michael :>)

Thanks for the compliment. I'm waiting for Footsore Miniatures to start doing unit packs before i buy any more infantry. Bill's really done some excellent Late Saxon sculpts that are begging to be part of the demo.
