Clubbing It! Cold War Commander; Hold and Wait to be Reinforced!

I'm a bit late on this Bat Rep- i really should have posted up these pics last week but have been otherwise engaged.

We played another set piece scenario for Cold War Commander using Nigel's lovely collection again. This time it was my duty as a commander of a scratch force of Soviet troops to hold my ground for twelve turns whilst awaiting reinforcements. Based on my form in the last game this was going to be a tricky proposition. The game lasted until turn two last time. My tactics were sorely lacking last time and I only made it to turn two!! This time we managed to get to turn three and I was still in the game- just! I think that one of the problems is that we're playing on a 5' wide table and the Brits are upon us immediately, this gives me no time to counter their advance and thus it becomes really difficult to put up any serious resistance- not that I'm making any excuses here! My tactical acumen is sorely lacking and I'm well out of my "full harness" comfort zone here as Jim, my NATO opponent poignantly pointed out!

The game thus far:

Clubbing it!!! CWC, Lion Rampant & Johnny Reb 2

There were very nice looking games at the club yesterday, Johnny Reb 2, Lion Rampant Dark Ages style and Cold War Commander in which I was taking the unenviable task of  the Russian commander (oh dear.....).

So, Cold War Commander; scenario was that I was trying to hold out for 12 turns from a defensive position until relieved.

Terrible Deployment or "Shame and eternal shame, nothing but shame!":

"Thus come the English, with full power upon us" And the Welsh, Scots and Irish.....

Ouch!

Slight traffic jam....

One of the other tables was hosting Shaun's ACW collection and was worth a few pics in between moments of hilarity on our table:

And in the other room there was once again a great looking game of Lion Rampant Dark Ages style:

In the event anyone is wondering what has happened to my usual relaxed conversational style of writing today- well, I had quite a lot of dentistry work done earlier and it's amazing how much actual pain can dull a mans senses :>)

Bye for now.

Clubbing it! Cold War Commander Game Two; Part Two

Last evening saw the finale of the Cold War Commander game were have been playing for the Western Front in Europe come to it's fiery climax!

The Challenger I's proved to be the proverbial Rayguns prescribed to them. nice and dig in along with the infantry they were a solid steadfast wall of defence against the oncoming Soviet hordes.

The game eventually boiled down to me needing fours or more to hit Jim and he needing sixes to hit my dug in armour which at most he could only temporarily suppress due to their Chobham Armour and being nicely tucked into the earth.

The game was also punctuated by some really lucky (freak!) dice rills on my part where I kept blasting away and scoring not just hits but those AFV's that didn't explode ended up mostly being suppressed.

Soviets Advance their BMP's on my right flank
(Significantly they fail to bebus their infantry):

Bish!:

Bash!:

Bosh!:

Quite a few iof the guys were playing the Dark ages variant of Lion Rampant (as published in Wargame Illustrated) and to my delight were at least a couple expressing an interest in playing original Medieval rules.

Clubbing it! Cold War Commander Game Two; Part One

It was with great relish that I had relinquished myself of the pesky Soviets and their Afghan allies and stepped into the more efficient shoes of a NATO commander and that of the British army too! The scenario is a defensive one on which the NATO player is challenged into stopping the Soviet hordes from advancing to take the high ground.

I was handsomely equipped with with some Challenger I's complete with HQ's and infantry support. I decided (re: advised by Nige!) that defence in depth was the way to go so I set about doing just that. I had two Challenger I's posted forward in my deployment zone supported by infantry backed with Anti Tank weapons. I placed my reserve HQ forward with the group so's to have a clear line of sight for the Soviet onslaught whilst keeping my Top Brass concealed in a wood where they would be safe until needed and kept back one Challenger I in reserve. I could also call upon the help of air support if needed. Pretty much all of my kit was dug in with reserve entrenchments to fall back on 'just in case!' (I hope my opponent Jim isn't reading this!)

My Challenger's challenges the Soviet Recon:

Soviet infantry Regiments Begin to Move Forward after Recieving a Severe Mauling to their Recon:

Soviet Air Power Fails to knock out any of my Challenger's!! Chobham Armour Rocks!!

Eventually my Forward HQ is knocked out of the Action! Ouch!!:

Soviet Hordes Continue their Seemingly Inexorable Advance:

The Harrier jumps into the action only to cause a Friendly Fire incident!! Ouch again!!

I Manage to Suppress my own Forward Infantry with Air to Ground!! Maybe the Tide is Turning for the NATO Forces?
